The Touring Luncheon is on Friday of next week, 24th, 12 noon at Dockside, Darling Harbour.

Part of the luncheon will be about reminiscing with fellow tourists – the sort of memories the newspaper article above is all about.  Ian Grose, 1971 -72 tourist, recently uncovered and sent the article in.

The 1971-72  World Tour’s 1st game was in San Francisco and received photo coverage in “The San Francisco Examiner”.

I remember our hosts saying, “For Rugby to get any coverage in a major US paper, was a first”. And to  share the coverage of our game on the prime Back Sports Page of the paper, along with the death of famous US Golfer Bobby Jones, was a an added bonus. I (Ian) am tackling the opposing ½ back – just a smidgen high and marginally late but – no damage done, Mal Ward is the other Petersham player in the background. When we left San Francisco for London, our host team and supporters came to the airport to see us off. They brought copious bottles of beer and all of them ended up actually on board the aircraft with all of us, beer and all. It was pandemonium as the hostess’ eventually gave up trying to work out who was travelling and who was not, eventually, the right people stayed and the locals left. Could you imagine that happening today??

Back to business – Have your organised your tickets to the luncheon yet?

Design and Construct are our major sponsors for the luncheon. They are recruitment specialists in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industries. Their support for Petersham is wonderful and our return support would be more than welcomed by the specialised staff of Design & Construct.
