Want to Play?
Thinking of having a go? Here are the answers to a few common questions:
Q: How many teams are there?
A: Petersham fields five senior mens rugby teams, so we won't have any trouble fitting you in somewhere. We are a famously social lot though, so don't worry about getting lost in the crowd!
Q: What is the standard of rugby?
A: Petersham's large spread of grades accomodates all standards of rugby from the serious to the seriously social. Teams are selected on a weekly basis according to form, fitness and general playing ability.
Q: Does it matter if I haven't played rugby before?
A: Not at all. Petersham has a large contingent of qualified coaches who can teach you the game they play in heaven right from square one. The only prerequisite is enthusiasm!
Q: How long is the season?
A: Petersham starts pre-season training in late January. This leads into a series of trial games in March, followed by the serious stuff in early April. There are eighteen rounds in the minor premiership, followed by three weeks of finals. The grand finals are usually played in mid-September. Easter and the public holiday long weekends are usually byes.
Q: What about training?
A: Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.30pm sharp at Camperdown Oval. Attendance at both sessions is expected for all players wishing to play higher grades.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Annual subscriptions are $230. This includes your registration and a basic level of insurance. Playing jumpers belong to the club and will be provided to you each week on game day. Club shorts and socks can be purchased from the club for $25 and $5 respectively. You will need to supply your own boots and mouthguard.
Q: How do I get started?
A: The first thing you have to do is turn up! Just get yourself down to training (the earlier in the season the better) and introduce yourself to one of the many club officials you will find there.
